Question by Driskoll: Has anyone here ever made their own glass beads, oxidized sterling silver, or done any…?
…silversmithing?
I love to make jewelry (have even sold a few things!!) and these are three things I want to learn how to do. I tried signing up for a few classes, but either they were full or cancelled because not enough people signed up. I would like to hear other’s experiences with doing any of these things. I am tempted to buy a kit and try making beads on my own, but I am afraid of the gas canister and blow torch:-} I think the silversmithing might be a little out of my price range right now. I would love suggestion on good books. There are so many out there. Thanks for any info!

Actually yes I have made my own glass beads. When I was a little younger I went to this thing called College for kids. So it was pretty much like this week long thing where you went to the college and signed up for two glasses that you wanted to take, I think I went like 6 times and I took things like german, interior design, vet, etc. etc. well anyway, one of the classes that I took for two years was this one where you made your own jewelry. We actually made our own glass beads, however the way we did it was in a kiln. We never used a gas canister or blow torch. I think you can get kits that have a microwave kiln thing at a store like hobby lobby, i’ve seen it there.
hope i helped
oh and p.s. We had to been these very thin strips of glass using a candle, and after i had bent it i accidently touched the hot glass, holy man did that hurt! so be careful and use with causion.
