Question by Jenn L: How do you cut abalone into different shapes for making jewelry?
I have raw abalone, and I am wondering if anyone out there knows how to safely cut it into different shapes for making jewelry. If you know of a website that talks about it specifically, that would be just as good! Thanks

You’d have to use a diamond saw with plenty of running water like they use to cut rocks and minerals. Eye protection and a mask that covers both nose and mouth are also required. Because shell is formed in layers it has a tendency to split, chip and fly apart. You’d need a fine saw blade. You should learn lapidary before working on shells.

I make jewelry and I’ve never know anyone who makes their own shell beads. I looked around the internet and could find no information.

supplies for jewelry making

So, even after throwing out things that really were junk, not stuff-waiting-to-happen, I have pretty much every sort of supply for every sort of medium one can easily do without specialised tools (like torches).

It helps if you’ve been stealing from school collecting stuff since eighth grade and a friend gave you her jewellery making stuff when she moved away. Please note that a horrible amount of this is either stuff I got for cheap or free when it was scrapped, stuff I got from taking apart broken things, finding things on the ground, and supplies that are a decade or more old (like ancient contés from the ’80s).

Notes are what the labels on the boxes and drawers all say, or what the general contents of a container are.

Hello!

Can someone tell me where in New York or online can I get a Metal Etching Kit? What chemicals are involved, and are they easy to use? Metal to be etched: silver, brass, copper.

Briefly, what is the process? I am currently creating and selling jewelry. This is for use at home. Any advice would be appreciated!!

I’ve been collecting silver for about 6 months. My collection ranges from 50% coins up to 99.99% silver maples. I’ve also purchased a lot of sterling silver jewellery. I’m not sure buying sterling was a good idea, but I figure silver is silver. Anyhow, the SLV market recently peaked at .50…
