Jewelry Supplies Needed for Crafting your Own Lampwork Beads

The term lampwork beads describes a particular type of hand worked glass bead that is commonly used in jewelry making.  Historically, the beads were made by melting glass over oil-fueled lamps as early as the 1st century B.C. in Syria.  The popularity of the beads grew over the centuries and Murano, Italy became the major producer during the 14th century.  The secrets behind making the beads were assiduously protected as were the jewelry supplies needed for the process.

Today, bead makers use butane, propane, or natural gas torches that are easily available in a variety of stores.  Glass rods used in the construction of the beads have also been standardized and are available for purchase in a rainbow of colors.  Here is a list of the basic tools you would need to begin working with lampwork beads – you can find all of these supplies online.

Glass

Clearly, if you are going to make glass beads, you will need glass.  Not every type of glass is suitable for lampwork.  Borosilicate glass, commonly known as “hard glass and soda-lime glass,” aka “soft” glass, are used in tandem to create the works of art common to this style of jewelry making.  Most important when combining the different types of glass is that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CEO) is compatible, or fracture and breakage, sometimes violent, will occur as pieces cool.

Torch

Selecting a torch is, to some degree, a personal matter.  From beginner models to complex ones capable of burning different types of gasses, you can find quite a variety of models online.  Beginners may do best purchasing a kit which comes with nearly all the pieces they need, while more advanced crafters should look at something more specialized.  Of course, it is best to try out a specific model before you spend your money if possible.  Versatility and affordability are your key determining factors.

Common Tools

While you must start your collection of tools with a torch and some glass, there are many other things you will need in order to create lampwork beads.

Marvers – are flat surfaces upon which you can roll your heated glass in order to shape it.  Some marvers may be rod shaped and come in different sizes for additional manipulation.

Molds – made from a variety of materials, these shape hot glass in to a specific shape, for example a round bead or an oval one.

Picks – typically made of tungsten, these are used to move glass around on a surface to pierce the bead and make a hole.

Jacks – are used to cut off the shaped glass from the larger rod.

There are other necessary tools such as heat proof work surfaces, mandrels upon which to form beads, and rod rests.  Considering the potential danger of working with torches and hot glass, classes in lampwork beadmaking are advisable.

Finding the Right Tools for the Right Price

As is always the case when starting a new hobby, costs can be as high as you want to make them.  If, after you have taken a class in glasswork you are certain you want to try your hand at the craft at home, then look for a website which offers a range of prices and a reasonable selection.  Don’t necessarily invest in top of the line equipment unless it is your goal to make a profession out of your new interest.

Finding a reliable, well stocked site is a boon.  Knowing that you can obtain the jewelry supplies you want in a reasonable amount of time will allow you to plan out your projects in advance.  Lampwork beads are beautiful, colorful, and just plain fun.  With all the different styles of beads you can make, you can enjoy your new craft for many years to come.

Charm Beads from the Middle Ages

Posted on 17th October 2011 in Silver Beads
silver charms beads
by JustJaynes

The Middle Ages included quite a bit of superstition and belief in magic. The traditions of this time were built on mythical stories of evil versus good. As a result, charm beads known as amulets were often worn to ward off evil spirits and to bring good luck. During this time, charms were used to heal and to protect. In order to bear a symbol of such powers, materials were designed into the gods of the times.

Intact charms that have endured the ages were worn by the Middle Age noble classes. This is because long-lasting precious metals such as pure silver and gold were only affordable to the elite. However, evidence of charms made of lower quality materials have been preserved. Such amulets were worn on belts and on a wide variety of jewelry.

The strong belief in the power of these amulets and charm beads was so prevalent during this time that they were even given to children as protection from evil spirits, disease, and other harmful influences.

Unfortunately, superstitious beliefs of the time were taken advantage of by fraudulent charm sellers. This included Middle Age religious institutions. Making money from such charms was an easy task during this era as diseases, most notably the Black Plague or Black Death, ravaged medieval Europe. Many cases of pneumonia, typhoid and other illnesses led to the irrational belief that  evil spirits were the cause. Even mental illness was rampant during this time. All of this caused the people of this age to seek answers beyond what their doctors were able to provide.

Foods such as “Agatha bread”, grapes, and kale were eaten in certain quantities and at particular times of year in the belief that they would bring good luck. Such traditions continue today.

These traditions do not seem so far fetched when one considers that many of these practices still take place around the world. In fact, the 21st century abounds with traditions first implemented by fearful inhabitants of the Middle Ages. With the help of the church at that time, sacramental objects and symbols were used during the Middle Ages. Many of these are still used. While these sacramentals are reminders of one’s faith, they continue to serve as objects which ward off bad luck and evil spirits.

Charm beads resembling the Middle Age symbols can be found in many historical museums. In addition, such charm beads are continually produced today for those with an interest in such symbolism.

Buying Jewelry Supplies And Beads Online

Posted on 17th October 2011 in Jewelry Making

by MissMessie

In the past you had to drive all over to find your jewelry supplies. And if you like beading you might have to try several places before you found what you want. Now, with all the online jewelry making sites you have a plethora of things to choose from.

All the regular supplies for beading and jewelry making can be found online. Whether you are looking for chains, earring findings, charms or pendants, no problem. Some of the other jewelry supplies you use in beading are bead boards, pliers, tweezers, ring openers, trays and knotters. All the wires, thread, ribbon and leather that you could want to string your beads on can easily be located online.

You can look up tutorials online on YouTube and other video sites. There is written material if you would rather have a written copy to learn from. Much of this is free which is certainly an advantage.

Beads are measured in millimeters, which is good to know before you order. You may want to invest in a bead measurer to help you out. One thing to keep in mind when you look at beads online is that they usually look larger than life. They want you to see all the details and color in clarity. Also the bead you see on screen may look perfect and shaped just right, but when you order your bead looks a bit different. Again they want you to see the best and most appealing. All beads are different which just add to their uniqueness.

There are so many materials, shapes and colors that you can find when looking at beads it is almost overwhelming. It’s like a treasure chest for the artist. You have to decide if you want large beads, small, round, spherical, etc. One suggestion is that large beads usually look particularly well on a necklace since they hang really well.

Lampwork beads are some of my favorites. The first ones were made by a glassmaker and a torch. They have come a long way and are mass produced. They also usually are typically long lasting beads that come in a huge variety of shapes, designs and colors. Lampwork beads can make a pretty centerpiece on your jewelry piece.

If you like beads made of metal you are in luck. Besides traditional gold and silver, there are “liquid gold” and “liquid silver” which come in small metal tubes and look beautiful draped together. You can also choose from copper or pewter.

Pearls are a favorite of many and the genuine cultured pearls are sought after. Be prepared to pay about 0 a strand for them. Fake pears are usually perfectly round and without blemish, while the real pearls have groove and show some irregularity in their shape.

Semi-precious stone buyers should study up and be aware of what type of gemstone they are purchasing since they are also somewhat costly.

Buying your jewelry supplies and beads has just gotten so much easier and if you shop around you can usually find a good discount online, as well as all the variety you could want.

The History of Venetian Glass and Murano Glass Beads is Long and Venerable

Using silver and glass beads to make up a unique charm bracelet has become very popular because they can be assembled to suit the wearer’s tastes and preferred style or colours.

The famous Murano beads are among the most popular glass beads made in Venice, the home of glass making.

It’s thought that glassmaking in Murano began as early as the 9th Century influenced by Asian and Muslim culture because Venice was a major trading port. The technique of enamelled glass came from the Syrians and after the fall of Damascus in 1400 and Constantinople in 1435 other techniques of decoration were added to the Venetian craftsmen’s repertoire.

In 1271 the Venetian authorities banned the import of foreign glass and forbade foreign glass makers from working in the city and in 1291, fearing fire in the city’s mostly wooden buildings the authorities ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to the island of Murano.

It was a skill that was jealously guarded and the Murano glassmakers were not allowed to leave the Venetian Republic, though some did take the risk, travelling as far as the Netherlands and England to set up their furnaces.

Glass is made from silica, which becomes liquid at high temperatures. There is a period during cooling from liquid to solid when it is soft and can be worked and shaped.

The Murano glassmakers developed several techniques including enamelled glass, called smalto, glass with threads of gold, called aventurine, and multicoloured glass, called millefiori, milk glass, called lattimo, and imitation gemstone glass.

Various other materials are added to glass that can produce different finishes. Soudium is used, for example, to make the glass surface opaque.

One of the most famous is the millefiori design, which is made by layering coloured, liquid glass with each layer shaped by a mould into a star, that is then stretched into long rods, called canes. When these have cooled the canes are sliced across. The cross section looks like a collection of flowers, hence the name millefiori (a thousand flowers).

Colour canes, with the colour introduced using chemical compounds, are the basis for making Murano beads. A very precise mix of copper and cobalt makes aquamarine colour, while a gold solution is the colouring agent for ruby red.

The method for bead-making was invented in the 1700s using two techniques, called wound lampworking and the torch and mandrel.

The process called lampworking is the most time-consuming as each bead is made individually. In this method the canes are heated to molten, wrapped around a metal rod and then worked by adding layers of different coloured glass as well as gold or silver leaf to achieve different effects.

Once the beads are cold and have turned solid they can be removed from the metal rod leaving a hole through which they can be threaded.

Among the most popular lampworked beads are the wedding cake – with glass overlays either featuring flowers or patterns of swirls or dots – and Venetian foil beads – fusing colour with gold or silver.

Canes are melted then blown to make blown beads. This is called the Filigrana or Filigree method.

Given the rich variety of the beads’ finishes, colours and pattens, it’s possible to create a unique bead charm bracelet with special significance for its owner.

All You Need To Know About Emerald Beads

Posted on 23rd August 2011 in Silver Beads

Be it a plain string of graduated emerald beads or mixed with gold or silver charms, a necklace or bracelet with emerald beads is a sure eye-catcher. An emerald is a beautiful gemstone that belongs to the gem species beryl. It is the birthstone of people who are born in May or those belonging to the star sign Cancer. However you don’t necessarily have to be born in May or belong to a particular star sign to enjoy the beauty of this spectacular stone. Apart from its incredible beauty emerald is said to enhance love and contentment in a person.

As the well known adage goes:

Who first beholds the light of day
In spring’s sweet, flower month of May
And wears an emerald all her life
Shall be a loved and a loving wife.

It is well-known for its healing properties, gazing at an emerald is supposed to soothe the eyes and it is even believed to cure epilepsy in children.

Though a lot of estate and expensive jewelry is made using cut stones, emerald beads are a fashion statement unto themselves. You can choose from a single strand graduated stone necklace or several rows of matched and graduated emerald beads to add pizzazz to that little black dress or evening gown- as the occasion demands.

A single emerald may set you back by a pretty penny, since it is rare to find clean gem-quality emeralds. However emerald beads are aplenty since this material is abundantly available in the market as it is not imperative for beads to be totally transparent.

So how do you go about choosing your emerald beads? Well, the ideal colour for an emerald is a pleasing deep-green; the colour of new leaves after a cleansing rainfall. However various tones may be present or the depth of colour may vary from stone to stone. While choosing your emerald beads from your jeweller or ordering them online, make sure all the beads in the string are evenly colored.

Emerald beads wholesale at reasonable prices online and many wholesalers also allow for retail single-purchase orders. Genuine emerald beads can be bought online as several reputed companies have a presence on the Internet nowadays.

Large emerald beads, small and medium in a variety of sizes and shapes are available. For the more adventurous options such as cabochons (a stone with a flat surface and a domed polished top), carvings (stones carved as leaves, flowerets, with striations and designs on their surface), cut stones and drops (tear drop shaped stones with a hole drilled at one end or drilled through) are also available. Beads can be used innovatively in single or multiple strands as necklaces. A long string of small equal-sized emerald beads interspersed with several large silver tubes at intervals can be used as a bohemian chic lariat when worn wrapped twice around your neck or several times on your wrist. Cabochons and carvings are best left to a professional jeweller to set in gold or silver. These pieces are ideal for that custom made jewelry piece you have always dreamed of designing yourself.

Cleaning and Care
Emerald is a naturally brittle stone so cracks and fissures may be visible on the bead. Worry not! This is okay as most commercial grade emerald is buffed with oil or infused with natural or man-made fillers to reduce visibility of the cracks and fissures and enhance the look of the stones. However for the same reason it is very important to take care while cleaning emerald beads/jewelry containing them. Never put your emerald in an ultrasonic cleaner as it may cause the fissures to be filled with dirty cleaning liquid and ruin the stone. Sudden sharp blows or extreme temperature swings may also harm the stone. Therefore do not wear emeralds in Jacuzzis, steam and sauna baths. Avoid using harsh detergents to clean the stones. The best way to clean your emeralds is with a mild detergent and soft brush. Wash clean in tap water and never forget to dry your jewelry before putting it away. Always store your jewelry separately, ie; pieces should be kept well away from each other so that no stones rub amongst themselves thus causing scratches and damage to softer stones.

Get New Ideal from Pewter Beads for Jewelry Making

Posted on 23rd August 2011 in Silver Beads

Pewter beads are basically metal beads made of the metal alloy called pewter. Some people may don’t know that is pewter. Pewter is one of the many alloys of tin having small amounts of other metals too. It is a malleable metal alloy with about 85-99% tin and the remainder consisting of copper, antimony, bismuth and lead. Lead is common in lower grades of pewter having bluish tint.

Modern age pewter mostly contains at least 90% tin and is alloyed with copper, antimony, or bismuth. Lead is no longer permitted to be an alloying element for making pewter. This is perhaps the reason why even lead free pewter beads can be found easily these days.

Pewter beads can be cast and manipulated into interesting shapes for various jewelry making purposes.  Pewter beads items include spacers, aligners, bead bars and bead frames among others. To create greater art and jewelry work variety these beads also come in styles such as alphabets and animals shapes. Some of the popular pewter beads designs can be listed as pewter round flower, square, rectangular, heart shapes, as well as faceted.

Pewter beads can be polished to a high, silver sheen or chemically darkened for a blacker metal look. This darker appearance of pewter beads seems to be more popular, as for a silver look people would more likely choose sterling silver. Dark colored pewter beads look quite distinctive and are extensively used for jewelry making. Pewter beads may tarnish to a dull grey color, but they can be easily cleaned. Some people even like the natural metal look of these beads and prefer to buy un-plated pewter beads.

Pewter beads usage is mainly related to making jewelry trinkets. Other than jewelry, pewter usage can be seen in making embellishments for fringes, curtains, throws etc. From among the pewter beads jewelry, pewter beads and charms are the most popular pewter beads jewelry. Pewter pendants and pewter necklaces are also popular among jewelry lovers. In fact, pewter spacer beads and pewter charms are used extensively for making other types of jewelry too.

Pewter beads can be easily purchased. You can purchase them from both online shops and local stores. While, if you would like to get unique pewter beads different from your next door store, you’d better to purchase them from online shops, for they can offer you the largest selection. PandaHall.com, one of the largest beads wholesale online shops, can offer you a wide range of selection for pewter beads as well as other jewelry beads & findings at low wholesale prices.

Do fake Pandora beads work with the real Pandora bracelet?

by Helmetti

Question by Michae: Do fake Pandora beads work with the real Pandora bracelet?
I wanted to get a new Pandora charm and I saw that places like Hallmark and Amazon have knock-offs. However I heard that the fake charms don’t work with the authentic bracelet (I have the silver one not the leather) Is this really the case?

Best answer:

Answer by Shakeeitx3
Yeah i heard that too. They don’t fit on right or aren’t the right size, something like that. I’d just go with the normal Pandora brand charms. I have a pandora and wouldn’t try any of the other brands, i think you’re referring to troll beads, which are different. use the pandora with the pandora bracelet.
