Question by Driskoll: Has anyone here ever made their own glass beads, oxidized sterling silver, or done any…?
…silversmithing?
I love to make jewelry (have even sold a few things!!) and these are three things I want to learn how to do. I tried signing up for a few classes, but either they were full or cancelled because not enough people signed up. I would like to hear other’s experiences with doing any of these things. I am tempted to buy a kit and try making beads on my own, but I am afraid of the gas canister and blow torch:-} I think the silversmithing might be a little out of my price range right now. I would love suggestion on good books. There are so many out there. Thanks for any info!

Actually yes I have made my own glass beads. When I was a little younger I went to this thing called College for kids. So it was pretty much like this week long thing where you went to the college and signed up for two glasses that you wanted to take, I think I went like 6 times and I took things like german, interior design, vet, etc. etc. well anyway, one of the classes that I took for two years was this one where you made your own jewelry. We actually made our own glass beads, however the way we did it was in a kiln. We never used a gas canister or blow torch. I think you can get kits that have a microwave kiln thing at a store like hobby lobby, i’ve seen it there. :)

hope i helped ;)

oh and p.s. We had to been these very thin strips of glass using a candle, and after i had bent it i accidently touched the hot glass, holy man did that hurt! so be careful and use with causion. :)

Question by topbuff_2000: Shop selling beads and supplies for making my own jewellery at the Bullring Birmingham?
I am visiting the Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham (UK) this weekend and want to know if there are any shops selling loose beads and jewellery making supplies? I make my own beaded necklaces etc and expect Birmingham is brimming with such shops but I do not know the area.

Any advice (with directions) would be great.

Thanks :-)

I’ve found one in the Jewellery Quarter – The Bead Loft. You need to google ‘Bead shops, Birmingham, UK’ to get maps. Also, Birmingham’s visitors’ guide has maps and information on retailers.

I have searched all over and am unable to find pewter bead molds.I have a sc2 kiln and know that if I have a crucible and tongs I could possibly pour my own pewter beads. I bought the stuff to make some molds for glass but cant seem to find any molds to buy for the pewter or silver I want to make ….

Any really….however i would stick to QUALITY beads, like fancy US made lamp-work…. any cool gemstone…swarovski crystals etc. using lower quality beads really cancels out the sterling silver….i mean, would you put bad rims on a nice car??
