Has anyone here ever made their own glass beads, oxidized sterling silver, or done any…?

Question by Driskoll: Has anyone here ever made their own glass beads, oxidized sterling silver, or done any…?
…silversmithing?
I love to make jewelry (have even sold a few things!!) and these are three things I want to learn how to do. I tried signing up for a few classes, but either they were full or cancelled because not enough people signed up. I would like to hear other’s experiences with doing any of these things. I am tempted to buy a kit and try making beads on my own, but I am afraid of the gas canister and blow torch:-} I think the silversmithing might be a little out of my price range right now. I would love suggestion on good books. There are so many out there. Thanks for any info!

Actually yes I have made my own glass beads. When I was a little younger I went to this thing called College for kids. So it was pretty much like this week long thing where you went to the college and signed up for two glasses that you wanted to take, I think I went like 6 times and I took things like german, interior design, vet, etc. etc. well anyway, one of the classes that I took for two years was this one where you made your own jewelry. We actually made our own glass beads, however the way we did it was in a kiln. We never used a gas canister or blow torch. I think you can get kits that have a microwave kiln thing at a store like hobby lobby, i’ve seen it there. :)

hope i helped ;)

oh and p.s. We had to been these very thin strips of glass using a candle, and after i had bent it i accidently touched the hot glass, holy man did that hurt! so be careful and use with causion. :)

Question by Josette D: where can I find pewter bead molds for wholesale. or cheap.I am starting to make my own metal beads.?
I have searched all over and am unable to find pewter bead molds.I have a sc2 kiln and know that if I have a crucible and tongs I could possibly pour my own pewter beads. I bought the stuff to make some molds for glass but cant seem to find any molds to buy for the pewter or silver I want to make ….

Please spell it JEWELRY. Otherwise it looks like a slam against Jewish people.

Most people buy from Fire Mountain Gems.

Q&A: Jewelry: how do you know is a good deal?

Posted on 5th November 2011 in Silver Beads

Question by Pretty Lady: Jewelry: how do you know is a good deal?
I want to start a jewelry line. My target will be young consumers at department stores. I plan to sell only sterling silver and gold plated sterling silver. I’m currently in the process of selecting & buying beads, charms, bracelets, necklaces and pendans from local and on-line stores. I found a site with awesome charms but some, to my inexperienced knowledge, seem pricey. examle: one sterling silver charm costs 5.65? good deal?

46 charms for $ 261?

You should learn about the craft of metalworking. Get some books from the library on the topic. It will give you a lot more freedom in your designs. I don’t think buying pieces from stores and assembling them is a very good business plan.

What are some other brands of beads that can still fit on a Pandora bracelet chain? Please only suggest brands that can be purchased in sterling silver, because all of my other charms are.
